The Seminar in Memory of the 50th Anniversary of the Publishing of “Joint Communique of the People’s Republic of China and the United States of America” On February 28, 1972, the Chinese and the American governments have issued “Joint Communique of the United States of America and the People's Republic of China”(Shanghai Communique), which has marked the beginning of the normalization of relationship between China and the United States, and was of great historical significance to peace and stability of Asia and the world. By reviewing history and exploring ways to solve current problems, China and the United States can jointly face the regional challenges through dialogue and consultation, which will help promote the normal stability of China-US relation and jointly undertake the international responsibilities. Taking the “Shanghai Communique” as a node, looking back on exchange history between Yunnan, China and the USA had a great practical significance for today China’s reform and opening up and the future China-USA relation. From March 1916 to October 1917, the Asian Animals Expedition Team of the American Museum of Natural History made a exploring trip in Yunnan, China. Roy Chapman Andrews, the most famous 20th-century explorer and naturalist of America and the Curator of the American Museum of Natural History, led the expedition from New York. This trip lasted about 19 months, and 9 months in Yunnan Province. This expedition was the most extensive collection of mammals specimen of China. They traveled 115 days on the saddle and 20 thousand miles on horseback, collected 41 boxes of specimen. The research played an important role in promoting the natural science in the era, and it was an important contribution to human understanding of earth species. 1942-1945 China-US Cooperation in the Myanmar Theater of World War II. The Hump Route in the China-Myanmar-India Theater from March 1942 to November 1945 marked by General Chenault’s 14th Air Force has achieved the revolution of fighting and transport in the air in the World War II.. Hump airlift is a feat of aviation logistics, which has exerted influence on the theater and global war strategy formulation, showing the great contribution of civil aviation to air transportation, and forming the air transport concept of global logistics supply of the US army. The success of the Hump Airlift made the planning and implementation of the Berlin Airlift from 1948 to 1949 to be possible. The Hump airlift was also an important entry point in the history of China-US relations. The "Special Duties Unit(SDU)" lost more than 500 planes, and more than 1,500 Chinese and American pilots sacrificed their lives during the operation. The crashed aircraft debris reflected sparkling against the Sun in the valley and the whole valley was thus called a "Aluminum Valley". It was written into Chinese junior high school textbooks. The lifeline of China and the United States in the China-Myanmar-India theater of World War II: the Stilwell Road, the Burma Road, and the Hump Route. 1942.11.17-1945.1.28 Stilwell Road, 1,220 kilometers, 1,133 American engineering corps soldiers died and more than 50,000 tons of military supplies were transported. 1937.11-1938.8.31 Burma Road, 1146.1 kilometers, more than 3,000 workers died, and more than 770,000 tons of military and civilian materials were transported. Hump Route, the US military lost more than 1,500 air-crafts, sacrificed nearly 3,000 American pilots and 168 Chinese pilots, transported 850,000 tons of strategic materials. 1977 USA National Chinese Association launched the campaign of Open Letter to President Carter. In 1978, American teacher Mrs.Booz and her son came to work in the Department of Foreign Languages of Yunnan University to teach English and became the first two American teachers in Chinese universities since 1949. In 1979, Werner Michael Blumenthal, the 64th U.S. Treasury Secretary, visited Kunming and delivered a speech at Yunnan University. This is the first public speech given by high American officials at a Chinese university since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States. 1980 China-US scientific and technological cooperation:West Yunnan Earthquake Observation Test Site. On January 1, 1979, China and the United States formally established diplomatic relations.According to the China-US Agreement on seismological research cooperation, from September 29 to October 30, 1980, Dr. M.Johnston, Mr. R.Mueller and Mr. J.Herriot of the United States,came to western Yunnan and Tianjin test sites, which were the first field geomagnetic observation and geodetic ranging sites designated by agreement, and carried out cooperation with Chinese counterparts, and achieved the first batch of observation data. The American scientists conducted academic exchanges with Chinese scientists and technicians, visited the Beijing seismic and geomagnetic transmission network, the library of Yunnan Seismological Bureau, the high pressure laboratory, Kunming and Chuxiong seismological stations. Other cooperation projects included Eryuan seismic station,which was an observation well of 266.56 meters deep, drilled in October 1984 at 400 meters straight to the east of the original station, then named Yunnan 20 well. It was put into operation in 1987. Since then being responsible for the earthquake monitoring and prediction task of Yunnan Seismological Bureau and west Yunnan Earthquake Prediction Experimental field. The West Yunnan earthquake test field is one of the six major earthquake test fields in the world in 1980. In 1996, China and the United States carried out seismological cooperation after the Lijiang earthquake. In March 1983, Pu Chaozhu, then secretary of the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee, met with visiting US Ambassador to China , Arthur William Hummel in Kunming. The English translator was Jin Cheng, now adviser to Kunming South and Southeastern Asia International Logistics Research Institute. Former U.S. Ambassador to China Arthur William Hummel Arthur William Hummel was the U.S. ambassador to China from 1981 to 1985. He was a key person of 8.17 communique, one of three agreements between China and the United States of America for diplomatic relations. In 1993, the Hump Route Monument was completed in Kunming. On May 11, 1993, the Hump Flight Monument was completed in Kunming. Sun Fuling, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), American Old Hump Pilots Association, officials of the U.S. Embassy in China and the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu attended the opening ceremony. Admiral Zhang Aiping, former Minister of National Defense of China, inscribed the monument. On May 13, 1993, Xiangyun county government rebuilt the memorial to Lieutenant Robert H. Mooney of 16th Squadron, 23rd Fighter Group of the United States Air Force contingent. On September 1, 2002, China-US Hump Airlift Memorial School was inaugurated in Kunming Foreign Languages College. Since 1999, American NGOs have carried out educational activities in Yunnan to protect the biodiversity and environment for Yunnan, projects to protect snub-nosed monkeys and Asian wild elephants. In 1998, the Nature Conservancy of the United States came to China and worked with the Yunnan Provincial government to compile the “Northwest Yunnan Conservation and Development Action Plan”. In November 2004, the Nature Conservancy launched the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey monitoring project in Yunnan. In 2007, the Nature Conservancy started a project to compile “China's Biodiversity Conservation Vision Plan”. In western Yunnan, Yunnan snub-nosed monkey patrol team was established, consisting entirely of local villager. The green credit was issued and alternative energy and environmental protection was carried out . In July 2000, The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), in cooperation with the Forestry Department of Yunnan Province and the Simao (now Pu ‘er ) Municipal government, launched the Asian Elephant and Habitat Conservation Project in China. In 2011, IFAW cooperated with Pu 'er Forestry Bureau to implement an experimental demonstration project on the protection of Asian elephants and their habitats, establish an early warning and monitoring system for Asian elephants, and promote environmental protection education. International Symposium on China-US World War II Friendship. April 22 to 28, 2000, the Beijing air association, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and foreign affairs committee of Chinese people's political consultative conference of Yunnan province with participation of four veterans organization (the AVG Flying Tigers Association, the American Flying Tiger and 14th Air Force Association, the China-Burma-India theater hump pilot's association) and Kunming aviation association, hosted Get-together of veterans of world war ii in Kunming, 2000. It is the largest and most influential event for Chinese and American world War II veterans. On October 17, 2002 - November 5, Chinese President Jiang Zemin visited the United States. Information Office and Yunnan and Zhejiang provincial governments held a large exhibition entitled “historical memory” at Washington "Woodrow Wilson center for international academic", Presidents Jiang Zemin and George Bush visited the exhibition. 26 - July 27, 2004, China-US friendship international academic symposium was held in Kunming, it was hosted by the government information office, the China-US aviation heritage foundation in Yunnan province. On July 28, 2004, at the closing ceremony, the conference announced plans to set up "the history of World War II studies and culture center", further promoted bilateral friendship and war history studies. On September 27-28, 2004, the International Academic Seminar on the West Yunnan Campaign of The China-Burma-India Theater was held in Tengchong. James Bradley, an American War History Writer, read a letter of appreciation from Former US President George H. W. Bush to Xiong Qinghua, Mayor of Baoshan. 2015 China-US GMS Cooperation Development Seminar. From October 17 to 18, 2015, Stimson Center and Kunming Pan-Asia Transportation and Logistics Research Institute jointly held China-US GMS Cooperation and Development Dialogue in Kunming. The discussions on hydro- power development in the Mekong River, alternative industry, and the US policies on the Mekong River have created a new model of dialogue and consultation between US and China think tanks on international and regional issues. In particular, The Chinese side arranged for the US side to exchange information on Myitsone power plant project of China Power Investment Corporation Yunnan and exchange with Xishuangbanna Jinggu Border Trading Company about the alternative industry in Laos. It played a positive role in the US State Department's formulation of policies regarding to Myitsone Power Station project and China's support of development of alternative industry in the Golden Triangle region of Laos and Myanmar.
